Operations CXO Status Report

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Nov 22 to uplink a flight software patch that updates the value of a PCAD constant to improve the accuracy of the on-board Sun vector calculation. Additional real-time procedures were executed on Nov 22-23 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the patch. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground. Additional real-time procedures were executed on Nov 23, 26, and 29 to perform full-frame dark current readouts of the Aspect Camera Assembly CCD.

Chandra press and image releases were issued on Nov 26 describing observations of a black hole that is influencing the rate of star formation in multiple galaxies and across vast distances. This is a rare example of "positive feedback" where a black hole is helping to spur star formation, not suppress it. Researchers used X-rays from Chandra, radio waves from the VLA, and optical light from ground-based telescopes to make this discovery. If confirmed, this result would represent the largest distance over which a black hole has boosted the birth of stars. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of SGR 1935+2154, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Nov 21, and an observation of FRB180916.J0158+65 coordinated with the Effelsberg radio telescope.
