Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 23 October 2020 9.00am EDT

During the last week the observing schedule was replanned to incorporate an observation of GRB 201015A, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Oct 19. Time from a scheduled observation of Orion Nebula Cluster was impacted by the replan and will be rescheduled in a future week.

A real-time procedure was executed on Oct 18 to monitor the ramp-up of the HRC-I detector high voltage, as part of an HRC-I check-out observation of Cas A for which all science commanding was in the weekly loads. The real-time procedure and the observation ran nominally and the observation data disclosed no performance concerns. Following a review on Oct 22, the HRC-I is returned to provisional use for science observations, beginning with the load starting on Oct 26.

Additional real-time procedures were executed during each ground contact to reset the DSN Outage Dead Man Load.

A Chandra image release was issued on Oct 22 describing a study which detects the gravitational redshift phenomenon in X-rays in Chandra observations of a binary star system containing a neutron star. This system, 4U 1916-053, exhibits shifts in spectral lines consistent with the predictions of general relativity. For details see: https://chandra.harvard.edu/photo/2020/lmxb/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of NovaRet2020, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Oct 15.
