Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 20 December 2024 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was executed on Dec 13 to patch the F_Eclipse K-Constant. This maintenance patch corrects for the expected slow decrease over time in trickle charge current from the solar arrays. Without this adjustment, during eclipse season the eclipse flag could toggle even with the arrays in sunlight, causing the On-Board Computer to initiate eclipse entry procedures at the wrong time. Additional real-time procedures were executed on Dec 16-20 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the flight software patch. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground.

A Chandra image release was issued on Dec 17 describing a Cosmic 'Wreath' displaying the "Stellar Circle of Life." This is a new image of the NGC 602 a star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud. It combines data from Chandra and the James Webb Telescope. It resembles a holiday wreath and shows young stars illuminating dark clouds of dust. Of note this week was the release on Dec 19 of the Cycle 27 Call for Proposals. The proposal submission deadline is 19 March 2025. In conjunction with the call was the release on Dec 17 of the CIAO version 4.17 analysis software system, Chandra CalDB version 4.11.6, SAOImage DS9 version 8.6, and MARX version 5.5.3.
