Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 31 January 2025 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed on Jan 24-27 to dump OBC-A and -B memory as a follow-up to the flight software patches uplinked on Jan 24. The dump will be used to update the baseline memory images maintained on the ground.

Chandra passed through the fifth and sixth eclipses of the season on Jan 26 and 29, respectively, with nominal power and thermal performance.

A Chandra image release was issued on Jan 27 describing images of the Perseus and Centaurus galaxy clusters. The results support a model where outbursts from the black holes in the centers of the individual galaxies trigger hot gas to cool and form narrow filaments of warm gas. Some of the gas in these warm filaments eventually flows back to the black hole, triggering another outburst. Turbulence in the gas also plays an important role in this triggering process. For details, see: https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2025/filaments/
