Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 18 November 2011 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A flight software patch was uplinked on Nov 17 to update the telescope forward thermal enclosure radiator and vent maximum temperature health-check threshold. The update is in response to increasing temperatures due to degradation of the Observatory's thermal covers during the mission and higher heating from the Earth due to a decreasing perigee altitude.

A Chandra press release was issued on Nov 17 describing observations of the black hole Cygnus X-1 with Chandra and radio, optical and other X-ray telescopes. Cygnus X-1 is a black hole about 15 times the mass of the Sun in orbit with a massive blue companion star. The combined data have revealed the spin, mass, and distance of this black hole more precisely than ever before. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/11_releases/press_111711.html

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of GRB 111117A, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Nov 17.
