Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 21 March 2014 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was used to monitor the momentum unload that was executed from the on-board command loads on Mar 16; the unload performance was nominal.

A Chandra press release was issued on Mar 19 announcing the selection of Dr. Belinda Wilkes as the next director of the Chandra X-ray Center (CXC). She will assume the directorship on April 20, 2014. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/press/14_releases/press_031914.html

A Chandra image release was issued on Mar 20 describing observations of DEM L241, a supernova remnant found in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small neighboring galaxy to the Milky Way. The observations provide evidence for a companion star that survived the blast of a supernova explosion. Chandra's X-rays reveal a point-like source within the debris field produced when a massive star exploded. This system contains either a neutron star or black hole and a surviving massive star. For details see: http://chandra.si.edu/photo/2014/deml241/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes a follow-up observation of SN 2012ca, which was accepted as a Target of Opportunity on Aug 14 and is coordinated with Spitzer, and an observation of NGC 5548 coordinated with HST.
