Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 13 November 2020 9.00am EST

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

Real-time procedures were executed on Nov 7 to perform an annual check-out of A-side MUPS thrusters, which are selected for use when Chandra is in its safe-mode configuration. Thrusters A2, A3, and A4 were fired. Thrusters performed nominally. Thruster A1 was not fired due to the expected limited life remaining on it. A real-time procedure was also executed on Nov 10 to monitor the ramp-up of the HRC-S detector high voltage, as part of an HRC-S check-out observation of Capella for which all science commanding was in the weekly loads. The real-time procedure and the observation ran nominally.

Additional real-time procedures were executed during each ground contact to reset the DSN Outage Dead Man Load.

A Chandra image release was issued on Nov 12 describing a study which found a bubble of ultra-hot gas at the center of the planetary nebula IC 4593. The study also finds evidence for a point-like X-ray source at the center of IC 4593. For details see: https://chandra.si.edu/photo/2020/ic4593/

The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and include observations of Saturn, which was accepted as a Director's Discretionary Time Target of Opportunity on Oct 19, and an observation of Swift J1858.6-0814, which is a follow-up to a Target of Opportunity accepted on May 4.
