Operations CXO Status Report

Friday 1 May 2009 9.00am EDT

During the last week Chandra completed the observing schedule as planned.

A real-time procedure was conducted on 28 April to uplink a flight software patch to update the telescope secondary thermal data base. The update allows for the contingency situation of the spacecraft being in prolonged Normal Sun Mode attitude prior to a short eclipse. The update enables an increased power-drain on the batteries to prevent an over-voltage condition on short-eclipse exit.

A Chandra image release was issued on 29 April of a region near the center of our Galaxy. This deep observation has resolved a long-standing mystery about the X-ray glow along the plane of the Galaxy. The glow in the region covered by the Chandra image was discovered to be caused by hundreds of point-like X- ray sources, implying that the glow along the plane of the Galaxy is due to millions of such sources. The schedule of targets for the next week is shown below and includes an observation of IM Lup coordinated with the VLT.
